My baby turned 19-months-old yesterday. About a week ago she’s started asking why whenever we told her something. “Little Girl, time to put your pajamas on.” “WHY?” “Because it’s late, and you need to go to sleep.” “WHY?” It is seriously so cute I can’t help but smile, even as she is driving me nuts with the whys.

Meanwhile, the big one has moved from writing lists and short stories to writing signs. Her backpack is filled with papers that focus on the clubs she and her friends have started. Crazy Daisies, for example, or The Best Friends Club. Again, I think it’s so fascinating to watch her evolve from a egotistical preschooler to a social grade schooler. And again I can’t help smiling when I see her handiwork.

These milestones are here today, mastered tomorrow. There will only be a short window when I can delight in Little Girl’s delight at learning why she can’t put her plate on her head. (I must admit, it reminded me of that Judy Blume book where the little brother screams, ‘Eat it or wear it,” and dumps a plate of something on his head.) And Big Girl isn’t going to be creating clubs — or leaving her handiwork out for me to see — forever.

Which is why I’m writing this post to remind you to live in today, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time. Time goes so quickly. Personally, I don’t want to miss a thing.

What was your favorite milestone to watch? What was your least favorite? Please share with the group!

My 2.5 year old got herself dressed today, well mostly. When did she get so big???

  2. Enjoy it while you can, even the whys. My ‘baby’ is turning 14yrs old in 10 days and even though the daily achievements have moved on a little from getting dressed herself, the milestone being set have just changed beyond all recognition and are getting a little more scary now… she is still my baby and delights me in her own way – everyday.

Thanks for the reminder. Mine are 17 and almost 12. It goes so quickly.
