Each child's experience is different. I think the novelty of weekly playdates with our first babies is that we didn't KNOW they wouldn't last forever. My Gymboree group sounds like yours. We met every Wednesday for playgroup (my only day off) and I looked forward to that day so much. Ten years later, and I miss those ladies! When you have older kids, schedules and priorities change and the playgroup ideal just doesn't meld into it anymore.

I work full time but I WORK 12 hr shifts. So my entire week is done in 3 days. The other days consist of cooking/ cleaning/ music class/ library story time. I'M SORRY I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR PLAY DATES. I HAVE HAD MORE THAN ONE MOM ASK MORE THAN ONE TIME..."GIVE ME SOME DATES SO WE CAN GET TOGETHER FOR A PLAY DATE" i want to but i look at my schedule, and they just don't fit in. I thank my neighbor who has 3 kids and we have so many impromptu.... play dates.... these are the kind i can do. If you want me for a play date i have to book you 6 weeks in advance and i might have to cancel if something comes up....SORRY.....I'M A WORKING MOM.
Karen, love your blogs...keep them coming

Hi Karen:

My kids are now 19 and 15 and I'm well past the playdating period. Still I remember (and long for) those innocent times, years when I attached monumental importance to weaning, teething and when other kids walked and talked. Today I worry about when my son should take his subject SATs; his grades are of monumental importance to me and to him. I lost my innocence a long time ago and, strangely enough, in my eyes, so has he. I realize, after writing the above, that I still worry about what grades my son's friends get!!! How much has really changed?

Thanks for sharing, Karen, and I enjoy your posts on FB!

Sniff sniff. Although I don't work full time I feel the same way as you. I have not done nearly as many playdates with my second as with my first. Mostly because once you factor in the older one's nap schedule, then add in nap time for the little one, I am left with barely any time left over. I know that the little one has one huge benefit that the big one did not- having an older sibling to learn from and play with!
